Managing Images in cPanel

cPanel Webhosting

The Images interface in cPanel provides an easy way to manage and edit the images stored in your hosting account. This interface includes the following features:

  • Thumbnailer: Generate smaller thumbnail versions of images in a folder. These thumbnails are saved in a separate subfolder named thumbnails.
  • Scaler: Adjust the dimensions of individual images to suit your needs.
  • Converter: Transform images from one file format to another, such as converting .jpg files to .png. This tool can apply changes to all images within a selected directory.

Before You Begin

To use the tools in the Images interface, make sure your images are uploaded using one of the following file management options in cPanel:

  • File Manager (cPanel > Home > Files > File Manager).
  • Web Disk (cPanel > Home > Files > Web Disk).
  • FTP Accounts (cPanel > Home > Files > FTP Accounts).

Thumbnailer

The Thumbnailer tool in cPanel helps you create smaller versions of images, also known as thumbnails. Thumbnails are useful for saving bandwidth, especially on image-heavy pages where smaller previews allow visitors to view an image before opening the larger version.

How the Thumbnailer Works

  • The tool creates a subdirectory called thumbnails within the folder you select.
  • Thumbnail files are given the prefix tn_ to distinguish them. For example, the tool creates a file named tn_image.png from the original image.png.

Steps to Create Thumbnails

  1. Navigate to the folder containing the images you want to convert.Tip: The tool works on entire folders, not individual images.
  2. Use the file navigation interface to locate the desired folder. Click the folder icon or name to select it.
  3. Click Thumbnail to proceed.
  4. Enter the percentage by which you want to shrink the images in the Scale Percent fields.Check the Keep Aspect Ratio box to maintain the image’s proportions and prevent distortion. If needed, click Reset Dimensions to restore the default scale values.
  5. Click Thumbnail Images to begin the conversion process.

After Conversion

Once the tool has created the thumbnails, you will see a confirmation message:

The system successfully converted your images into thumbnail images and stored them in the following location: /home/user/.cpanel/thumbnails/tn_*

Click the thumbnail path in the message to open the folder in the File Manager interface (cPanel > Home > Files > File Manager).

Scaler

The Scaler tool allows you to resize images, either enlarging or shrinking them based on your requirements. This tool is helpful for optimizing image sizes to match your website’s design or reduce file size for faster loading.

How to Resize an Image

  1. Navigate to the folder containing the image you want to resize.
  2. Locate the image and click Scale to open the resizing options.
  3. Set the new image size using one of the following methods:
    • Enter the desired dimensions in pixels in the New Dimensions fields.
    • Specify the resizing percentage in the Percent fields to shrink or enlarge proportionally.
  4. Check the Keep the current aspect ratio box to maintain the image’s proportions and avoid distortion.
  5. If needed, click Reset Dimensions to restore the scaling values to their default settings.
  6. To save a copy of the original image before resizing, check the Retain a copy of the old image as box. Enter the file path where you want to save the copy.
  7. Click Scale Image to apply the changes. A confirmation message will appear once the resizing is complete.

Converter

The Converter tool lets you change image files from one format to another, supporting commonly used file types. This is ideal for standardizing image formats or optimizing them for specific uses.

How to Convert Image File Types

  1. Navigate to the folder containing the image or images you want to convert.
    • You can click on the folder icon or name to browse the file system.
  2. Select the folder or file you wish to convert.
  3. Click Convert to open the conversion options.
  4. Choose the target file format from the available options, including:
    • .PNG
    • .JPG
    • .GIF
    • .BMP
  5. Click Convert to start the process.

After Conversion

When the conversion is complete, a confirmation message will appear. The system saves the converted file in the same folder as the original image.
