Precise SEO copywriting is essential for a website to rank high in Google search results. To create click-generating blog posts as cornerstone content on your website, you need to complete an important task: finding the best keywords. Depending on the subject matter, there may be some obvious keywords, but since the search engine algorithm is complex, this part of SEO optimisation can’t be done in a snap. Let’s dive into our series of articles on how to research the right keywords effectively! After parts one and two, here’s the next part.
Keyword Weighting
By following the advice in the first two articles, you should now have quite a few keywords on your list. But how do you know which ones are more important? How do you weight terms effectively? To help answer these questions, here is a quick, free, and easy solution.
It’s worth downloading the Keyword Surfer add-on for the Chrome browser. Once activated, start a search through Google. A box will appear on the right side of the search results, listing similar terms. Next to each relevant keyword, you’ll see how many times per month the term is searched for in your country, with the most popular ones naturally at the top. We ran a random test: for the term “wireless headphones”, we received 76 related results, along with search volume data and a percentage showing the similarity to the original term.
The resulting numbers can serve as a great starting point, but there is one more piece of data to consider. When using the plugin, each search will display in the search box how much a Google AdWords ad costs per click for that term. This data will also assist with keyword weighting.
Questions to Consider
When ranking your keywords, it’s helpful to ask yourself the following questions:
- Based on the research, which keywords are likely to bring in the most traffic?
- Which keywords are difficult to compete for (in terms of cost)?
- Do we already have content for that keyword? If not, what should be done to create it?
- Can using that keyword lead to conversions?
