Internet Protocol Number

More commonly known as an IP address, this identifier is used to directly determine a specific user’s computer and its location on a network. It also indicates both the host and the network being used. An IP address consists of four numbers between 0 and 255, separated by dots.

Domain Name

A domain name is the name used to identify a website. This means the name must be unique, as a domain that has already been registered cannot be registered again. In addition, every domain name includes an extension, such as .co.uk or .com.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

Although its formal name is Uniform Resource Locator, the abbreviation URL is far more widely used and easier to recognise. On the internet, a URL is the standard way of presenting a web address. A URL consists of two main parts: the first refers to the protocol being used, while the second identifies the domain name. Together, these elements precisely determine the location of a webpage on the internet.

Server

A server can be either a computer or a piece of software designed to store information that can be accessed via the internet. Other computers connected to the internet can use the server to store data and retrieve it whenever needed.

Host

A host is a company or organisation that provides web hosting and domain registration services for businesses or individuals. A host typically uses servers to connect domain names with IP addresses, ensuring that websites can be located and accessed online.

Active Server Pages (ASP)

Active Server Pages (ASP) is a technology developed by Microsoft that enables the creation of dynamic content on websites.

Audio Streaming

Audio content on a website can only be accessed if the site supports audio streaming functionality. This typically requires a significant amount of bandwidth to deliver audio data smoothly to users.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth refers to the theoretical amount of data that can be transferred to and from a server at the same time over a network connection.

Common Gateway Interface (CGI)

Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is a protocol standard that allows applications to interact with web servers, enabling dynamic features on websites.

Encrypted Password

An encrypted password is a password that has been converted into another data format in order to protect it from unauthorised access. Only authorised users can use an encrypted password, typically through software capable of decrypting the protected data.
